Throttle Position Sensor - 01Forester

Featured Replies

Hello,

I recently got a 2001 Forester but soon after I got it the check engine light came on. I had it checked and it was reading as a throttle position sensor error.

I had noticed a lack in responsiveness from the throttle over the past two weeks and then today, I couldn't get it above 40mph. It was pretty cold out - 37degrees - so I'm thinking that had an effect on the TPS malfunctioning.

Can I simply replace the TPS? or do I need to do anything else or get anything else for this problem?

Any and all help would be great!

There are checks you can do on the TPS. If you search here you may find the readings.

Check the wires and clean the plug with some contact cleaner. If you clear the code and it comes back and or the TPS readings are out you'll have to change it.

The TPS will have to be adjsted when installed unless you grab the complete throttle body.

I have several at home, but it would be Wed before I could ship it.

I'm sure lots of USMB members have them floating around from doing the 2.5 to 2.2 swaps.

Thanks for the info, I figured that it would need to be reset once I installed the sensor. I don't have a diagnostic device to do that, so I'm guessing I'll have to take it to the mechanic. Do you have extra TPS's? Or extra throttle bodies?

Complete throttle bodies. 4 bolts and the two coolant hoses and cables and you are done.

You can check the TPS adjustment with a voltmeter if you have one of those.

Try searching the board for a Forester service manual. I'm sure someone here has one you can look at online or download.
