:confused:I have a 2009 impreza outback sport with 6k miles and am wondering what is REQUIRED maintenence for my subaru? I have been getting emails from the dealer saying I am due/overdue for "recommended" maintenence, but if I followed their schedule I would be spending a fortune every 3k to 5k miles to have things done. Is all these little things necessary or is there a simple way to do what is required and not lose my factory warranty. Thanks.......

Required maintenance and the scheduled intervals should be in your owners packet in the maintenance manual.

Dealers often add on little things to make some extra coin and call it the "Recommended" maintenance package, or add on a lot and call it a "Premium" or similar package. It differs between dealers but they should have all of their service packages clearly posted in the service department. Most dealers also have brochures detailing their services that should have a list of what is included in each package.

on all my cars I've always just done oil change every 3-4k, rotate the tires every other oil change and I have done the big interval maintenaces - 30, 60, 90, 120K.

 

and **Knock on wood** I've never had a warranty item denied for "lack of recommended maintenance."

those services are a nice way to loose money and fund the dealerships, that's where they generate a lot of revenue.

 

they'll typically say "10,000 mile service"

and list: Check wipers, ball joints, tie rods, washer fluid level, oil level, brake fluid, change oil, check transmission oil, check diff oil....." - you get the point they essentially make a huge list of things that sound like a lot but really it isn't.

 

best to make note of the things you need and have those done.

 

Necessary items (mileages could vary based on use/oppinion):

 

Oil change.

Rotate tires. (every 15k roughly, depends on use and tire wear)

30k - air filter, coolant, and transmission fluid

 

at 100k plan on the big one - differentials, timing belt, brake fluid flush, spark plugs and wires.
