Yea interested in the no start issue. Heres the problem, my brother being the way he is isnt interested in dumping huge amounts into the car if its going to be problematic. Ive never know a coil to do things like this soo its kinda like where do we go from here. Again car shuts off and will just turn over and over for like 5 minutes until voala it starts and runs fine again.

Oh and are NGK wires the same as oem wires. As far as plugs go, id go with ngk but i didnt know if i needed to go platnum, or v grove, or any of those other kooky types.

Don't know about NGK being OEM supplier. All I know is what I said - these engines are not forgiving at all with wires, it's quite annoying.

If he doesn't want to throw money into it then there's not much he can do, I can't think of any definitive test that will tell him exactly what is wrong.

But I would go have the codes checked.

Electrical problems are usually intermittent like this which is why I suspect coil/crank/cam sensors.

You said no CEL.

Does the CEL turn on with the key turned to "On" or is the bulb dead for it?

Read the codes, it surely has a code stored...:-\

sweet - that's great news the light doesn't work. Makes it simple as it probably has a code - read it.

Battery light on will point to alternator/battery/cable issues or more likely might be dead battery due to constantly trying to start it.

Ok going over there to check some things out. Well see what i can come up with. Will take som pictures. Fuel pumps should humm somewhat when the key is in the on position right. Is it obvious or do i need to hover around the tank.

Checked fuel pump, its working past the filter. Buy the way is the filter suspost to be heavy. Im pretty sure its the original. Battery tested ok at first until the drain was bad. Then i tested the alternator and seems to not be chargeing. Is it possible this shutdown issue is the alternator. Its the only basic thing i can find not working.

I'm lost as to what all happened so far, but you have a non starting car and haven't tried to jump start it yet? Silly rabbit, go try and jump it that will immediately rule out all sorts of things.

Ok heres the history.

1997 Subaru Legacy GT

Drove it from iowa city to west des moines with no problems. Around 200 or so miles. Immediately the next day. You start it, and it runs for 5 to 10 minutes then dies. You cant restart it for 5 to 20 minutes latter. Then it starts and runs fine until it dies again. After the 5 to 20 minutes it starts like nothing was wrong. I have tried jump starting it but does the same thing. I put the battery form my car in it and started fine but alternator seemed to be pulling a draw. So took the battery and alternator to the parts store. Both have seemed to check out fine.

Things that have been checked.

Battery was good but now drained and getting charged. Possibly new one on the way.

Alternator i thought was bad but took it to autozone and tested good there.

Checked ignition module and wires. They are in decent order and working properly.

Fuel has been checked to the filter and after the filter and works fine.

What am i missing here.

What am i missing here.

it's not what you're missing - it's what you're not doing:

Nope check engine light in operative. This is lovely.

Guys, my friends. Forgive me but if the car doesnt stay running, how can i get it somewhere to read the codes.

  • Author

Ok well it stayed running long enough to get it to autozone. But they said because the check engine light wasnt on they werent going to check the codes. After argueing that it didnt work they still said no way. So we ended up takeing it to the local subaru dealership :-\ (ramsey aka nevermind) so they can have a crack at it. On a side note on the way back we spotted an 02 Subaru WRX for sale. 91k 5 speed, nice and clean for 7k. My brother says if this turns out to be a lemon hes gonna trade it in on that one. He didnt want a payment but we drove the car and its much nicer then the legacy.

did ramsey kill it.

update wanted. dont let them near Guido please tell experience with Ramsey

DING DING DING we have a winner. Crank Angle Sensor. It runs perfect now. But its still at ramsey getting the check engine and some other things taken care of. Ramsey was pretty nice on the deal. Kinda supriseing.
