Hello I'm new here and can't find out how to start new threads. I know kinda dumb huh. Anyways what I'm trying to figure out is if I can bolt in a EJ22 into my 95 Impreza. Right now I have the EJ18 with a 5 speed. Does the EJ 22 and the EJ18 have the same tranny? Can I just swap the engines, if so that the tranny's match, what type of wiring issuse am I going to run into? I'm just tired of shifting down into 3rd gear to get up hills! Thanks

Remove the intake from the EJ18. Bolt it onto the EJ22 and you are done. The exhaust will fit if it is a '96 and older EJ22. Otherwise, you need the header from the later motor.

Some other advice...

Look for new thread button next time. You find a search function here as well. These have been swapped many times and all the info needed to do it is here for the finding.

Enjoy your stay.

Very easy swap - plug and play no wiring. No differences in trans, bolts right up.

Two minor issues:

EJ18's all had EGR so you have two options:

1. Do what I do and get an EJ22 without EGR and save yourself the annoyance. But then you have a check engine light.

2. Get an EJ22 with EGR.

The other issue is exhaust - EJ18 is dual port exhaust.

95 EJ22 is dual port exhaust (auto has EGR, manual probably won't).

96+ EJ22's are single port exhaust, but that's easy to deal with, just get the exhaust manifold with it, it bolts right up to the car in place of your old one. Most 96's all have EGR (99%).

97 and up EJ22's are interference engines - if the timing belt breaks you'll sustain valve damage. Be sure to properly maintain the timing belts due to that.

If you insist on posting behind all of my posts at least get it right.

The EGR is not an issue if you keep the intake form the car on the new engine. EGR is part of the intake. By doing it this way there is not a check engine light. The ECU has no problems running the EJ22 either.

97+ not 96+ are single port. Irregardless of interference or not the timing belts should be maintained per Subaru service intervals.
