Outback steering rack or inner tie rods?

Featured Replies

Seems like we're seeing more steering rack failures. With EA, ER, and early/mid 90's EJ stuff I've hardly seen any failures (one leaking rack in an 80's Subaru a couple years ago is the only one I've seen). Seen quite a few late 90's and 2000's now. Another weak point on EJ's?

Late 90's are getting in the 10-14 year old range, so I wouldnt be too alarmed. I have only seen a few 2000's issues. Also keep in mind the cars are getting heavier, so that will have an effect on the rack.

I don't know that I'd call this a "failure" just yet. Doesn't leak a drop, doesn't make any grinding or chattery sounds, just clunks when I go over certain bumps. I'm gonna leave it be for now and see how long it lasts until it falls apart or starts puking fluid.
