I was looking through the owner manual of my 83 wagon. Is checking the torque on the head bolts a common task?

No. That is only done durring break-in maintenance when the engine is new. And then only when you use head gaskets that require it.

 

DO NOT touch your head bolts unless the engine has been rebuilt recently and you know what you are doing.
