Just bought a '98 Forester and I'm pretty sure the brakes are going. I've done my fair share of brake jobs. Is there anything I should know about these Foresters before I get my hands dirty? I also called on pricing and the guys at NAPA were talking about a shim. What is the purpose of the shim?

Thanks

Adam

The brakes are pretty standard.

The only shims that I can think they're talking about are the little clips that go onto the caliper and the clips on the back of the brake pad. They're there to help reduce brake pad squeel. You definitely want to reuse the clips that clip onto the caliper. Personally, I don't care for the shims on the back of the brake pad as they tend to make more noise than they're supposed to solve. But that's my opinion :)

Seeing as you are up in the snow belt, you can bet yur bippy that the bolts that hold the disc bracket in place are frozen. Take my advice, hit them with heat before trying to wrench them off.

+1 on that, maybe do a good soak down with PB Blaster too. I failed to do that on my OBW, and sheared off one of the bolts that attaches the caliper. Then, the fun began.
