OSD language change - How to?

Featured Replies

Hi

I own a 2005 “fourth generation” Subaru H6 Outback (3L) that I recently imported into New Zealand from Japan. The vehicle is fitted with OEM fit McIntosh sound and a HDD Navigation system. The HDD is in the glove box & not under the passenger seat. At the moment all screen instructions are all in Japanese. The only on screen number information I can find is: V 04.25.15, HD 10945991 and CDDB 2578. The problem with the OSD (On Screen Display) is that it is in Japanese and doesn’t have GPS map coverage for New Zealand.

Can you anyone offer a solution how to change either the map and or the OSD language?

Thanks in advance

Hmmm... a Japanese model you probably can't press "Reset" and make it go back to the default settings.

I dunno, go find a Japanese restaurant and ask if they can figure it out? Might be worth a shot!

I have been told that:

"The OSD language can be installed by the manufacturer of the head unit. They have the firmware for the unit, and just uplate the unit with a USB cable connecting the computer, then the language will be English".

OK ..... so who made the head unit and how do I contact them?

on my handheld GPS, low end no name, there is a language selection tab. maybe yours too. of course your language choices may be japaneze or korean or chinese.

if only you could read the tabs.

i'd contact a dealer if it was original equipment, and a japanese restaurant or teacher or someone similar if it is aftermarket. someone who can read the manufacturer's name.

You likely have an OEM Kenwood system. Does the following look familar?

(You can use a web-based translator, but there isn't much more of a clue than the picture and the Kenwood link, which is dead.)

Kenwood was an OEM supplier:

The Kenwood firmware comes on a DVD, and I believe it's needed to change both the OSD language and GPS map.

If you don't have an English copy of the owner's manual, you might be able to get the info for free.

From http://techinfo.subaru.com/html/index.jsp :

"OWNERS MANUALS: If you are a current Subaru owner, and you are looking for an Owners Manual, please go directly to https://my.subaru.com. You will be able to view your specific Owners Manual free of charge with your free registration to the site."

I hope that helps.

Thanks for the post bust I am not 100% certain that this is a Kenwood system. I know it is similar to the USA spec’ system but I am being told that the Japenese hardware is different ... Can anyone confirm this? If so who made my hardware and does anyone have an email address for them?

“Pictures paint a thousand words” ... So here are a few of the system in question:

Nice pictures -- did you compare them with the ones in the links in my previous post (#7) in this thread? The in-dash shots certainly look similar.

The version of Compact Disk Database (CDDB 2578) matches the one used in certain Kenwood models. Perhaps you could contact Gracenote and ask them if there's a correlation. http://www.gracenote.com/

Beyond that, it's not likely that many of us on USMB have much experience with JDM nav systems. Good luck.

Did you have any luck? I've got an 07 coming and I'm sure it will have the japanese screen too. All the ones I've test driven have that screen unless they're NZ new.

Cheers, Al
