starting 5spd swap on my xt6, what do i need from the donor?

Featured Replies

88 xt6 ft4wd autotragic being swapped to 5spd ft4wd. just picked up the donor car today. so far my list is as follows. if ive missed anything please ring in and let me know. also any advice, or tips for the swap would be greatly appreciated as well

trans and crossmember

rear diff

pedal assembly/cable

diff lock solenoids/switch

driveshaft

guage cluster

starter

flywheel

clutch kit

thats off the top of my head, are all the speed sensors the same auto/stick, axles (front and rear) and so on?? any advice of what im up against would be appreciated too...

i also hope to order a lift like what grossgary put on his 6. so basically my 6 is going to get a HUGE UPGRADE!! 5spd, and lift with some bigger rims/tires.. i already have a set of 17" wheels i just need tires.

what is the donor car? another '6?

as long as it's an EA82t or XT6, the axles will work.

if it's an EA82t, you won't have to swap the rear diff (XT6 4EAT is 3.7, as is the Ea82t FT4WDs)

if the gauge cluster is like the standard Ea82s, the wiring for it will be quite different between them. when I did it in my loyale, I opted to just leave the auto cluster there.

speed sensor is in the gauge. I've never had good luck taking the cable off the trans, so I just leave that attached and bring it with.

that's about it.....looks like a good list.

its another xt6. same 88 just 5spd. i may have to score a set of pedals from someone on here thou, these are looking bent and a little messed up...(gas pedal mostly) might be able to change just that over from mine, not sure yet.. ill have to see when i get them out thou. but basically, all the axles are the same automatic, to standard xt6's?? i sure hope so cuz the donor car doesnt have a good axle in it  i got it to run this morning and drove it around the yard click clack patty whack damn this thing is ruff!! diff lock didnt want to stay engaged, so i may need those too..

Hi ,

the wiring for the manual trans is going to be different from your car, the doner wiring might need to splice in for the reverse lights and nutral safety switch.

not sure if the driveshaft carrier bearing mounts are in the auto trans body, and you need to use the complete suspension crossmember from the rear doner cause it has the diff mount in the middle. you did the right thing getting the whole car!

i thought these were pre-wired for all options... ie standard/auto?? guess ill have to get under it and see if theres any unused plugs near the tranny.

the cars are both ft4wd. the rear diff mounts are different?? ill have to check on that as well.

hi,

no, sorry . some how i was thinking you were dealing with a 2wd , yes the rear is same for both 4wd.

you are doing what i wish i could do to my xt6 , i'll be watching this thread closely , best of luck with the swap . i love to shift , i drive my 81 gl wagon for that reason , more than my 88xt6 . all the best , murph

i will be sure to let ya know what, if any, problems i run into while doing the swap. i hear ya i love stick! lucky me i have my 2010 rs/ss camaro with a 6spd and 426h/p to hold me over now that the nice weather is back here in ct :lol:.. ive had a few xt6s that were stick, and theyre so much more fun to drive than automatic. granted in the automatic i get close to 30mpg highway driving.. never even came close to that with the stick. i hope the swap goes smooth, and i dont have to buy a bunch of stuff so i can afford to buy the lift kit for it as well.

oh yea, wiring will be different. no plugs for the trans, and the plugs for the gauge cluster are *probably* different (like I said, they were in my loyale).

you'll have to jumper the start interlock so it'll start (fool it into thinking it's in park or neutral all the time).

if you want the reverse lights to work, you'll have to get a little creative.

I don't think of those things, because I don't care . backup lights and neutral start switch (and low range/diff lock indicators for that matter) didn't work in my loyale. whatever, the important stuff worked

axles are 100% interchangeable. all XT6s have 25-spline axle stubs.

rear diff mount is the same, although ratio is definitely different (3.7 for the auto, 3.9 for the MT), so you will have to swap it.

carrier bearing mount is there, no sweat.

being that im going xt6 to xt6.. i THINK the guage clusters should interchange no problem. i would hope they are plug and play. i really need someone who has done this exact swap to chime in here..
