question I had a aftermarket gasket just blow to hell and a exhaust stud that just fell out (I put new headers on 6 months ago)

 

anyways looking at the factory gaskets (much thicker) does it matter what side the gasket is facing? One side is smooth and the other has little indents.

It doesn't matter. Just make sure the surface is clean before you install it or you'll have to put a new one on in another 6 months.

one of the exhaust bolts fell out while driving (the whole cause of this)

 

how do you screw in the new bolt? two bolt nuts and turning the wrenches the opposite directions?

You might want to put some locktite on the stud. Be careful not to over torque it. Use a torque wrench and follow the spec in the manual.

I replaced several studs when I did my engine swap last summer. I called every muffler shop in town looking for them and finally found some at a Midas place. They charged me 5 bucks for a handful of them. As far as the nuts go, I had to use regular nuts. The original nuts are rated at a much higher temperature, I'm sure, and locktite doesn't go up to 800 degrees IIRC. I figured I would just keep an eye on them and tighten as necessary. So far they aren't leaking. You could probably get replacement nuts from the dealership, but they will be pricey.

yes the stud and nut came to like $16...

 

I wonder if worn motor mounts could attribute to making the bolts become loose faster?

i put the smooth side against the head. you can get studs in the 'HELP!" brand from autozone, either a pair of studs, or 3 studs and 2 bolts in the 'gm/toyota(corolla, geo) set.

 

sometimes the threads dont want to hold torque. its best to thread in a stud first, and then the nut. this way the torque is squeezed up by the nut instead of the threads in the head.

The day i got the stud and nut I had a hard time trying to thread the stud in. I spent about 20 min on my back trying to thread it in but it never would catch.. but then again I did not remove the header.. I'm hoping I don't have to remove the header because I did not buy the gasket for the header to cat

it was rather painless the gasket was shot to hell.. I think one may of fell down into the headers a small piece.. but last week of this month I will be replacing the cats anyways
