Taking it out!

Recommended Posts

'82 subaru gl wagon. was wondering, i removed ac compressor, ac hoses, small ac coil in front of radiator. dont have any overheating issues, just decided to get rid of all that stuff. my question is...can i go under the passenger side dash and remove all those black boxes such as blower and heater core, and whatever else? not gonna use ac or heater, just open windows and vents. is it possible? will it effect my coolant temp or start giving me issues? please let me know. thanks in advance

As long as you loop the heater hose connections together, there won't be any problems. However, the heater is useful for defrosting the windshield. Depending on the A/C compressor, if it was a "York" manufactured compressor, it will work well as an air compressor for inflating tires and whatnot. Some of the earlier dealer-installed A/C systems used the York compressor.

The box that the a/c evaporator is in under the dash can be removed and replaced with the tube that goes in a non-ac car. That opens up a fair bit of space in the passenger footwell.

Heater is completely seperate from the AC system.

You can remove the AC condensor core - it's between the blower motor and the heater core container - behind the glove-box. You will need to replace the removed condensor with the corrugated tube that connects the blower motor to the heater core so you can still have heat and defrost.

It would be stupid to remove the heater. Don't be stupid. Besides that you would have to remove the dash to get at it - it's behind the radio.
