February 15, 200422 yr Hey guys.. On my '90 Legacy wagon MT, I believe the starter is going out. When I turn the key to the start position I can hear the starter engage but it's very hard to turn over...It's not a slow turnover, it just takes like 4-6-10 times of trying to get it started. Here's what I've ruled out as being the problem: The car runs perfectly when it gets started, no stumble, no hesitation, no excessive gas consumption, so I crossed the fuel injection system off the list. All the injectors are pulsing properly by the way. I just replaced the battery and tested the alternator and they are both fine. Hmmmmmmmm Dan
February 16, 200422 yr Can you push it to start it? It could be the starter switch or solinoid. Try bridging the big wire on the starter and the small wire with the clip on it with a nice insulated screwdriver or something. Have the car in NEUTRAL and with the key on the ON position. If it is a switch problem or a connection other than the battery it'll start right up. Oh yeah watch for the sparks.
February 16, 200422 yr could also be starter CONTACTs.... we sell a TON of them at work (subaru dealership) cheers Jamie
February 16, 200422 yr If the starter contacts have never been replaced before, it is the first thing I would look at. I had to do mine twice so far, so about every 80k for me.
February 16, 200422 yr A clicking usually means a bad starter solonoid. Anyone know if you can replace these on Soob starters, or do you need to get a whole new starter???
February 16, 200422 yr You can replace the starter solenoid contacts, if that's what it is. check an old thread of mine. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/usmb/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2447&perpage=25& there's pics later in the thread with what the contacts look like and where you can get them.
