Strange thud after offroading, need help!

Featured Replies

I recently went off roading in my 03 impreza outback sport for the first time, it was great. But Now im facing a strange issue, on the passenger side on the floor u can feel and here a object, or something rolling and thudding. I have jacked the car up and cheched pretty much everything under the front passenger side floor. All ican think is that a rock slipped up into the frame and is now rolling.

No frame. Unibody. If a rock somehow got inside of the unibody, you should be able to see the hole where it entered. I'd bet it'd take some damage to get it in there as they usually don't leave many holes in the unibody to prevent trapped water. Thusly you would have had to punch a hole into the body to get the rock in there. There could however be rock/debris trapped above some skidplates, or rattle shields.

I'd be you hurt a CV axle. Just my first thought as this can happen fairly easily offroading. A CV that has been hyperextended out of joint can make some pretty funny noises, and vibrations as it pops in and out of joint. Jack the car up and check the closest CV to the noise. Noise can bounce around fairly easily inside a car, considering it is a fairly large hollow steel tube. That can make diagnosis more difficult.

If the CV is fine, get the car up on a lift and take a GOOD look around. Your rear driveshaft you have a stick jammed against it or something silly like that.

I had that for a while too. what solved it was a really really good washing of the under body with a hose. It drove me nuts.

Thats also true, i was on some pretty gnar trails so hella dirt and crap is probably stuck in there.

Look in the glove box and make sure there isn't something in there sliding around. Same with the cargo area in the trunk. Could also be something under the carpet down by the shield that covers the ECU (loose screw maybe).

the strangest things is that you can feel the object moving under your feet when your in the front passenger seet. But i can find nothing , even a buddy of mine felt it then got under her i tried to find it with no luck. I feel like this is one of those probems that might take a while to diagnose, i might lift it up at my school to make it easier to check everything.
