May 31, 201015 yr Well. A nice chain of events may have ruined my axle seal in the front. Im not sure of the correct name of this seal, the one on the transmission(transaxle?) side. I had my strut on the passenger side brake into two pieces (pics will be up tomorrow) While replacing it the strut pushed on the spindle and pulled th cv axle out. And now I have a leak. We put the axle back in and it slid in nice and easy. No idea how it could have ruined the seal. So, anyone got a part number for the seal, where I could get it or even the correct name? Oh I also had the brake bleeder brake off on my new caliper...thank god for lifetime warranties.
June 1, 201015 yr Author Im not talking about the seal by the wheel. Im talking about the other side, Im leaking I believe ATF? Im new to these cars and AWD and dont know as much as I need to. Ive always driven rwd.
June 1, 201015 yr You shouldn't be leaking ATF as the front diff is sealed from the transmission. It's supposed to be 80w90 gear oil. If it's coming out red someone has added the wrong fluid to the differential at some point. What you need is probably called a differential oil seal or diff axle seal at a local parts store. Or a wheel seal, like gary said: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsShelf.jsp?categoryDisplayName=Drivetrain&fromType=parts&fromString=search&parentId=12-0¤tPage=1&filterByKeyWord=wheel+seal&isSearchByPartNumber=false&navValue=11200256&categoryNValue=11299999&fromWhere=&itemId=256-0&displayName=Wheel+Seal+-+Front&searchText=wheel+seal Edited June 1, 201015 yr by Fairtax4me
June 1, 201015 yr Author So instead of calling the axle seal an axle seal its called a wheel seal on these cars? Im trying to get this done today, missing work as it is.
June 1, 201015 yr Passenger Side: Subaru P/N 806730031 http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partdetail.php?partid=15394 Driver Side: Subaru P/N 806730032 http://www.subarupartsforyou.com/cp_partdetail.php?partid=15395 Looks like items 5 and 17 here: http://opposedforces.com/parts/legacy/us_b11/type_45/train/differential_transmission/ Edited June 1, 201015 yr by Mike104
June 1, 201015 yr Author crisis averted. When we were doing this job it was getting dark out last night. Got under their this morning to find that the cv axle hadnt seated all the way. Now I just gotta go get a caliper and some fluids.
June 1, 201015 yr Good thing! I was coming back to edit my post to mention some important items when changing those seals (had to find the details first). http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=81057&highlight=front+axle+seal But nevermind since you don't need to change the seal.
June 1, 201015 yr Author Those heat shields on the exhaust sure can hold alot of fluid too! Was worried the car might catch on fire. And yet another heatshield is falling off now. Thanks for the info, good to know for if I ever have to do the seals (I probably will seeing as I dont plan on parting with the car)
June 2, 201015 yr Author P.S. That hacksaw just happened to be sitting their when the pic was took, it was not involved in any process whatsoever.
