2005 Impreza 2.5RS

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I just picked up a low mileage 2005 Impreza with the little motor. Is there anything I should be paying attention to in regards to potential trouble items?

Thanks!

Head gasket issues, piston slap, rod knock too occasionally.

How is a 2.5l a little engine? :D

yes:

rotate your tires and make sure they match, and don't improperly tow the car. change the transmission fluid at some point. this is a 4WD vehicle, so treating it like a 2WD or ignoring those points could lead to transmission damage.

timing belt change is at 105,000 miles on this engine. it's an interference engine, meaning you'll incur bent valves if the timing belt breaks, plan on a major maintenance at that time - timing belt, pulleys, and tensioner. replace it all and you're good for another 105,000 miles.

if the coolant is ever changed, this motor (it's the only one with this requirement) requires a subaru coolant additive.

I meant it wasn't the WRX or STI model. No insult intended!

No offence taken :) Besides, all of the pre-2000 WRX's and STI's were EJ20 - and they all haul rump roast. :D
