I have a 98 OBS that has a strange speedo problem. On most days it will register fine, upt to 60 - 65 mph then all the way down to 0. Other days, temp independent, it will stick at 40 on the way up.

 

Is there a root cause for this? Older car, rugged, but not wanting to be driven by wife due to inability to see how fast she is going.

 

Yes, I suggested driving as fast as everyone else just to be sure - did not work as a solution....

Usually it's a bad cluster. Sometimes it's a VSS.

Any CEL ?

 

Could be you alread have one bad VSS and the other dying. Could be a bad ground in the cluster.

CEL is on. I'm going to get a scanner next week as my 07 Suzuki SX4 is giving me CEL every so often.

Lazy man ignore-it fix is to just stick a Wal-Mart GPS on the dash and use it for a speedo for the wife.
