August 15, 201015 yr Hi, I need help removing the inner tie-rod on a 95 Legacy AWD auto. I've got the outer tie-rod off and the boot covering the inner tie-rod off. How do I knock the lockwasher out or off before trying to loosen the tie-rod? Thanks, any help would be great. I did see the other post but I don't have that special tool and it didn't say anything about removing the lock washer. Dan
August 15, 201015 yr i've never had a problem getting them off except limited space, but i've always gotten them off just fine. i've used a monkey wrench/pipe wrench before to remove them when you have enough room. i believe a huge wrench fits too, right? i don't recall removing the lock washers, though i know what you speak of since i've seen them in the boxes...but i don't remember ever having a problem getting them off. just bend them if they're in the way. you should be installing new washers anyway, most tie rods i've seen come with them.
August 16, 201015 yr No special tools needed. I use a large pair of channel lock / water pump pliers or a pipe wrench to grip the large end and just let the lock washer open up on its own as it spins it out, as the washer is soft metal. Easy change out.
August 16, 201015 yr Author Thanks guys, I was able to bend the lock washer out of the way. The washer seemed to be holding the tie-rod from losening. I was able to fit a big wrench 1 and 1/4 on the tie-rod to break it lose.
