i have never touched a subaru manual window crank, but in most cars there is a spring clip behind the crank handle. if you slide the clip towards the end you grab it will release the handle.

Yes, there is a clip behind the handle you have to release and the handle slides off. There is a special tool for it, but you really don't need it, you can just get in there with a long thin flathead screwdriver and pop the clip.

You can, but when the tool is ussually less than $10 bucks...........and makes it SOOOOO much easier (nearly automatic) I preffer using the tool.

 

Same tool ussually has slots for pulling the door card clips as well so its a win/win

I have the tool. I wasn't sure the OP wanted to buy it just to use once.
