October 26, 201015 yr A guy here has a JDM EJ that seems different to me - the intake manifold is black, and does not seem to be aluminum. Any idea what this engine is? No, I don't have pics.
October 26, 201015 yr Is it turbo or non-turbo? Non-turbo EJ20 SOHC had the plastic manifold for a while in the mid 90s, turbo with plastic manifolds came in 2004, first on the Legacy TwinScroll Turbo. Those engines are very sensitive to tune and break easily.
October 26, 201015 yr Author Well, he has already removed the manifold from the block, and I did not get to see the block. I'll have to ask more ?'s next time I'm out there.
October 26, 201015 yr Well, he has already removed the manifold from the block, and I did not get to see the block. I'll have to ask more ?'s next time I'm out there. Gotcha. It'd be pretty tough to identify the motor by just the manifold. ha ha BTW, hello, neighbor! If you're in the Kootaneys, we're practically neighbors. I'm just south of you in eastern WA.
October 26, 201015 yr Author BTW, hello, neighbor! If you're in the Kootaneys, we're practically neighbors. I'm just south of you in eastern WA. Cool, yah I'm in the Kootenays. Where are you in WA? Spoki?
October 26, 201015 yr Yeah - north of Spokane about an hour. I've always wanted to come up there and see what cool parts I can get in the junkyards that we don't have here...
October 27, 201015 yr Author Expensive cool parts. The yards are mostly a ripoff up here. Plus, most of the cool stuff went to the states.
October 27, 201015 yr Expensive cool parts. The yards are mostly a ripoff up here. Plus, most of the cool stuff went to the states. Pretty bad, eh? Our yards are usually pretty cheap. What town are you in? I'll still have to pick through the canuck yards someday...
October 27, 201015 yr Author Nelson. Lots of Soobs here -mostly on the road. Even a guy with a lifted Loyale.
October 27, 201015 yr Nelson! All right...cannibus capital of southwest Canada! ha ha Nelson is only a couple hours from me.
October 27, 201015 yr Back to the engine... If it stil has the timing belt covers, there is a chance that there still is a sticker with barcode and engine code on the center cover. I bet it is either a EJ20X or EJ20Y, depending if it is MT or AT. Those engines have dual AVCS (variable valve timing on intake and exhaust) and a compression ratio of 9.5 (high for a turbo, hence senstive to tune and easy to break).
