October 26, 201015 yr Were there any differences in the cam and crank sensor wheels from 1990-1996 on the EJ2.2? I have a 1995/6 block and heads (roller rockers), and a manifold/harness from a 1992. I know the sensor connectors are different (sensors in block only have connections for Signal +/-), but not sure if I'll run into any issues other than that.
October 26, 201015 yr No, the Cam pulleys are the same for all Phase I EJ22 Early sensors have wires attached, and connect at back of motor. Later models sensor have connectors at right at the sensor. Electrically they interchange, use whichever ones needed to match the Harness in the car.
October 26, 201015 yr Author Yay - solves one headache. Now I just need to get my dad to finish machining the FW before the snow comes.
October 26, 201015 yr No, the Cam pulleys are the same for all Phase I EJ22 are you sure of that? the location of the cam sensor changed in '95 or so, and I was under the impression that the cam pulley was different as well. interchangeable.....but different.
October 26, 201015 yr Author I know the sensor is a little different mounting. All I am concerned about is whether or not the signal output to the CPU will be OK.
October 27, 201015 yr are you sure of that? the location of the cam sensor changed in '95 or so, and I was under the impression that the cam pulley was different as well. interchangeable.....but different. I have a 96 EJ22 (SP exhaust, roller rockers) in my 89 wagon, and it's just the same as the ones on the early 2.2s in Legacies. Other than the sensors electrical connection. I guess I am not 100% positve about 97-98 engines but the ones I've seen didn't jump out as different.
October 27, 201015 yr it is the exact same sensor with a different plug, agreed. but I guarantee it's in a slightly different place. when I put the '96 impreza 2.2 in the '86 wagon a couple years ago, the timing covers were in pretty crappy shape, and I had some off a '93 motor. the hole was in a noticeably different place. probably 10 degrees or so lower. unfortunately I no longer have any of that stuff in my possession, so I can't compare them. I can only assume the tone ring on the pulley is calibrated differently to accommodate.
October 27, 201015 yr All Phase I SOHC cam timing pulleys are exactly the same. The only difference is the first gen Legacy use sensors with long leads, the later cars use sensors with connector w/o lead.
