would an ej22 run with the timing a tooth off?

Probably, but to what degree depends on where the timing is off. One tooth at the crank sprocket is about 15 degrees, while at cams it's half that. One tooth off at only one cam would act differently than if it was at both. The effect will also vary depending on whether the error creates an advance or retardation.

I ask because mine is missing and running rough, and it wont rev past 4000 rpm. I changed plugs, wires, and coil and it is still missing. i did a valve adjustment before i dropped it back in and i think it skipped a tooth while i was hand cranking it. the belt has about 70k on it so its about due but i don't want to take it apart again if that's not the fix. any ideas would help! Its a 95 legacy L with 170k. its throwing P0302 misfire on cylinder 2
