1980 Subaru Brat build Project

Recommended Posts

This is my first subaru project build I traded a 1966 Honda Dream for a 1980 Subaru Brat the project is a little bigger then I had originaly anticipated the rear wheel wells are completely rotted through down into the framework if anyone knows where I can get some new reproduction body panels I will be needing plenty of them or if somone knows where I can find decent used parts I would be okay with that as well The project runs and I have a chiltons guide for it the 4th cylander is only running at 90 pounds the rest are all running at 150 I will be pulling the valve covers off and adjusting and making sure they are fine to get it running with the rest of them otherwise a whole engine rebuild will be done I do have one question if anyone could answer it I rebuilt the carburator about 2 days after I got the vehicle which helped alot however when I turn the key to the on position it dosent prime the fuel into the float bowl to start the car insted I have to hook a jumper line directly to the battery to prime the carb to start the car are these vehicles not ones that do self prime when the ignition is turned on or do I just need a stronger fuel pump to put more fuel through while starting? I will post pictures as I get them. Also if anyone knows where I can get a 4" or 6" lift let me know the Brat already has 16" rims and its going to get 31x10.5x16 wongleflute cepek crushers.

No it has the ea71 engine right now but im planning on putting the 1800cc engine in with the 5speed tranny and hi low 4wd (big plans for this little brat) Or another thought I had was putting a slant 6 out of a dodge dart into it make some modifications and find a decent t-case from a 4wd dodge anyone think that might work?

I only know this from asking the same question, the fuel pump on these only works while the engine is turning. You won't get fuel to the carb until you start cranking the engine, and while it running. On here somewhere is the "How to keep your Subaru alive" manual. it has really good explanation of how to trace down what your trying to figure out. Good luck! Cheers! :)

Thanks for that information I was able to find a pdf of the manual and I think it will come in alot of use as I progress on this project though I still need to know where I can get a 6" lift and some body parts none of my local junkyards have anything at all

Yes, you could put any engine in anything if you really wanted to, but you should keep it a subaru. Those old brats are rare and i don't think they should have anything under the hood but a boxer.

Just my .02

Yeah your right anything less than a subaru in a subaru and I may has well tear the bed out and mount a 350 back there right? Besides owning a brat has been a long time dream of mine since I was younger and I know its going to be alot of work but the turnout will be well worth it. By the what what do people think of the color Synergy Green its a color they made for the 2010 camaro im thinking of painting it that color when im all done?

I did look maybe im not in the right place exactly but im not finding anything for a gen 1 brat most of the fourms I have found with any info there hasnt been any activity on them for a number of months or better I was hoping to get intouch with the beast i drive he had one listed a while ago that I liked the looks of and wouldnt mind getting one from him otherwise if somone even had the specs for making one they were willing to shoot me a copy of that would be fine too I have the equipment I would be more then happy to make one myself with some specs?

Just putting some random thought into this but is the 1.8L engine with 5spd trans and hi low transfer a direct bolt up for a gen 1 brat or do I need motor mounts trans mounts etc as well im assuming it will fit in the gen 1 space without modifications? Also as im getting further into this project I have parts from the vehicle I dont need anymore the topper that was on it has sun fade but still works, the jump seats with seatbelts the one on the passangers side has a small crack, I also have a set of 5 original rims with 5 good treads on them, and an extra 1.6 ea71 block (not sure of condition) if anyone is interested in any of this stuff let me know make me an offer
