83 wagon fuel carb problem?

Featured Replies

Hey all.

My 83 started falling on its face a little on take offs and shifts making it necessary to throttle up to keep the engine going. I wasn't overly concerned because I'm planning on a weber swap already, but... while returning home a couple days ago on the interstate the engine died at 60 mph and would not restart. I spent a few tense minutes on the shoulder with people inexplicably rubber necking and swerving toward me. The engine would fire every try but die immediately . After about 2 dozen tries the engine fired up and stayed running so I took off and it got me home. Since then I've driven it around town with no issues other than the hesitation / stutter I mentioned earlier. Any Ideas? An idea of where I should start looking would be appreciated :) .

what were the outside temps?

frozen up carb maybe.

do you have the heat pipe tubing duct coming up to the air cleaner from the right exhaust. Thats the preheater tube and keeps te carb from icing over in cold.

Hey,

It was this past Tuesday afternoon so 20-30 degrees or so. I hadn't thought of that I'll check it out thanks :)

I'm not technical when it comes to carbs but I had this EXACT same issue and the pin the butterfly sits on needed new bushings on each side (worn out completely).

Or that's what I think I remember from the mechanic.
