97 OBW 5sp transmission question

Featured Replies

I've tried doing a search with no luck and I really need the answer quickly.

Recently bought a 97 Legacy OBW Limited with the 2.5 which is bad shape which is why the $400 price. Found a low mileage 2.2l out of a 97 OBW and have a chance to get the tranny too. I've been reading about the EJ2.5 to EJ2.2 swap and seems easy enough but have yet to find if the trannies are the same and will swap too.

Thanks for any help

Often not without swapping the rear diff as well.

A GUESS would be the 2.2 is from an L and the 2.5 from an Outback or GT. Don't get me wrong - the tranny will probably bolt up - but you also need the matching diff.

And swapping the driveline shouls cause odometer issues. But if you swap both pieces it should work assuming sensors and such are the same.

Thanks Dave that's kind of what I came up with searching but wasn't sure....

the 97 outback manual did not come stock with an ej22, it had the ej25 (dohc, count them). the 96 obw 5 speed did. so you might want to clear that up first.

the 5 speeds from the 2.5L lego & outback cars 96 - 99 all have the same final drive ratio. so if the ''new'' 5 speed is from an outback it will bolt right in, no issues. if it is from a 2.2L car you will need the matching rear diff.

the only other trans question is are the clutches the same, hydraulic vs. cable. i have no idea, but someone will.

so what car is the donor engine coming out of??

ditto for the donor trans?
