no purge control solenoid valve?

Featured Replies

I don't have a charcoal canister in my 96 Legacy. I believe it was up front, came out with the motor and then I installed a motor that didn't have a charcoal canister in the engine bay. So now I have no charcoal canister/purge control solenoid?

Are there any side effects to that?

Seems like something must be missing, I've done nothing to address this but the car has driven fine for the past few years and 40,000 miles.

I have a P0440 Purge Control Solenoid Valve code. Where is the purge control solenoid valve located in a car that has the charcoal canister in the rear?

Mine is under the passenger intake runners. There is a hard steel line under there that connects to the vent hose on the drivers side strut tower by the other two fuel lines. The vent hose runs to the back of the car where the canister is.

You get a CEL, but no harmful effects to the engine.

If the canister vent hose is just hanging somewhere the fuel vapor will just vent to the atmosphere, so you're causing global warming.:lol:

P0440 is a general evap code, and is usually set when it can't pull a vacuum on the fuel tank. There's a fuel tank pressure sensor, temp sensor, and 2 solenoids in the system to go with the charcoal canister.

Unplugging the pcs will set a different code, something about purge solenoid C circuit failure. It's located under the intake manifold right next to the 1" idle air control hose.

It shouldn't be hard to re-route the vacuum hoses and reinstall a charcoal canister.

what is the doodad next to the canister in the rear.? i have a p0441 code, purge flow fault i think, and i assumed it was the what ever next to the canister.

the previous owner backed the car into the waterway/ ocean when unloading his boat. the salt water has rusted up everything and i think it has messed up the doodad with the wire at the canister.
