Any idea why car won't move after ATF change?

Featured Replies

There's a subaru for sale here, but the guy says that it won't move since he changed out the ATF... he wants $550 for the 1992 legacy wagon. Thought I would ask if it's something simple... lol.

Thanks guys!

Pretty simple....It didn't move before he changed out the ATF, either.

Beware! It could be that it wasn't working before and the fluid was changed to see if it would fix it.

Unless you can verify low fluid is the cause, you should assume it will need major work and consider how willing you are to purchase it and repair or replace the transmission.

assuming he isn't lying to you and it was really dead before, he probably drained the trans and filled the differential. it happens sometimes with newbies. sad but true.

check the ATF dip stick and the front diff dipstick. if you don't know where they are ask. and then ask the seller to show you. if he gets them wrong then you'll know. ATF dip stick is ~24'' long, diff is about 4'' long.

but the bottom line is it probably needs a trans. i wouldn't buy it unless you plan on paying for one. you might get lucky and not need one but i would not bet on it.
