87 gl-10 running issue

Recommended Posts

Hey guys im new to this thread... i picked up an 87 gl-10 1.8 fuel injected suby alittle bit ago..got it running, it needed a new turbo. but now it's got some other smaller issues i can't quite figure out..

Here's a list of what i've done so far..

Tune up-cap, rotor, wires, plugs

fuel filter,

replaced all turbo gaskets..

new O2 sensors.. (are these things supposed to have two or one?all i can see is the one on the side of the CAT)

...

what it's doing is it'll start great..but then die..and wont maintain idle speed..until it warms up, but even then it still struggles to idle unless you keep your foot on the pedal.

while driving if you try to give it more then 1/4 pedal throttle..it wont accelerate very well..if i give it over 1/2 throttle..you can the turbo spool up but it wont go anywhere...?!?! and sometimes it even dies. what gives.?

i checked the compression on the engine a bit ago and remember it was over 150 each cylider...

could this be a fuel issue?.. any help would be great..thank.s:)

Oh! So many possibilities, so few hours to type...

First, just one O2 sensor, typically screwed into the downpipe near the turbo outlet.

What do you know of the car's history? Why dd the Turbo need replacing?

Doing the Hi-tension side of the ignition was a good start. Are you sure that you got all the plug wires going to the proper cylinders? (Have to ask...)

Did you try to adjust the ignition timing? Special procedure...

Did you check the timing belts? Is it possible that the non-distributor side belt is broken? Or that both belts were worked on and not aligned properly? (Both of these are VERY common issues.)

How old is the gas? I personally have not had problems with 2-year old gas, but others have. Injectors may be dirty/plugged... I have not personally had this issue.

Possibility of vacuum leaks? Are all of the hoses connected properly (or at least as far as you can tell)? Try spraying some carb cleaner around likely vacuum leak spots and see if idle changes.

There is a Coolant Thermo Sensor (CTS) that is tucked behind the intake manifold on the US-passenger side of the throttle body, and this tends to have connector/wiring corrosion iissues. If it isn't giving you problems now, it will in the future.

This ought to give you a few places to look and think about.

ok sweet i'll try that temp sensor... here's another question about it..

what should the fuel pressure be going into the fuel rail?? i thought it was usually around 45-50psi? but i dont know much about suby's..

it start's just fine. no mis-fire, so i know the wires are on correctly.

i'm leaning more toward's a fuel issue though with the way it's acting...you'll be driving and and if you give it less then 1/4 throttle then it will accelorate better...but you try to push it ...and it starts to fall on its face..not die or cut out..just extreme lack of power...and thre have been times while driving it that something seems to kick in and she wants to take off.. and drive amazingly!.... would that be more the coolant switch? or fuel you think?..im going to test the fuel pressure anyway.. just wondered what some thoughts were.

[What do you know of the car's history? Why dd the Turbo need replacing?

TURBO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED CAUSE IT SUCKED IN PART OF THE FILTER THROUGH THE INDUCTION SIDE AND MESSED UP THE WHEEL PRETTY BAD.

Did you try to adjust the ignition timing? Special procedure...

WHAT KIND OF SPECAIL PROCEDURE? AND HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT IT IS? I HAVE NOT MESSED WITH THE TIMING AT ALL..

Did you check the timing belts? Is it possible that the non-distributor side belt is broken? Or that both belts were worked on and not aligned properly? (Both of these are VERY common issues.) IF THE BELT WAS BROKEN WOULD IT NOT START AT ALL? IT STARTS AND RUNS OK..IT DOESNT MISS-FIRE, JUST DOENST WANT TO ACCELERATE.

How old is the gas? I personally have not had problems with 2-year old gas, but others have. Injectors may be dirty/plugged... I have not personally had this issue. THE GAS WAS OLD, SO I DRAINED IT AND FOR THE PAST MONTH I HAVE BEEN PUTTING IN SEA FOAM INJECTION/FUEL CLEANNER (IT'S THE ONLY ONE I TRUST AND KNOW THAT WORKS)

Possibility of vacuum leaks? DID THE BREAK CLEAN TEST...ENGINE RPM STAYED THE SAME SO NO LEAKS THERE

There is a Coolant Thermo Sensor (CTS) that is tucked behind the intake manifold on the US-passenger side of the throttle body, and this tends to have connector/wiring corrosion iissues. If it isn't giving you problems now, it will in the future. THIS THE NEXT STEP IM GOING TO DO..DID THESE THINGS COME WITH A TPS SENSOR? (THROTTLE POSISION SENSOR) IT REALLY SEEMS TO ACT LIKE THAT ...

THANK THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP ... THIS IS ALOT CHEAPER THEN 80BUCKS AN HOUR EVERY SHOP AROUND ME WANTS TO CHARGE..

WOAH! I'm an owner of a 1988 subaru GL wagon and I've been looking for Hours for someone with the same problem as me!

Mine is doing all the same things as yours. I had the water pump and timing belt replaced a couple weeks ago and there's been no change for the better. One of my friends thinks it might be an o2 sensor and so I would like to know how to track it down so I can change it out.

I'm not very knowledgeable about cars, though I'm pretty smart about these sort of things. Can someone let me know if I'm getting in over my head? I'm an engineering major at college but I have no idea where to look for things like this in a car.

Thanks so much!
