ELM327 bluetooth OBDII scan tool question

Featured Replies

I have this ELM327 scantool for my 1997 outback to pair the device the passkey is 6789.. So I did that and I use the program called torque and it says it's connected to the device but I don't see any live data from it and it wont read any of the ECM codes or anything like that when I had the CEL on.

Anything I did wrong that I can think of?

This is the one I have here

My best guess is that it does not support the protocol used by Subaru in the 97MY Outback. Or it's broken.

I got it somewhat.. others with a MY year mine have the same issue sometimes it shows and sometimes not.. it's a program issue in the software and not the hardware.

I did get it to show my oxygen sensor data and throttle and coolant temps so it works but you have to mess around with it a bit.

hahaha true at least I got SOME life out of it

I just got a KKL vagcom USB to OBD2 cable (from deal extreme) and used it with free-SSM. It worked. Suprisingly because european cars did not support obd2 until 2003 so my 1999 impreza only supports subaru select monitor.

If you find any other software i am interested.

I was able to see real-time data, read and clear errors

You will have to make a bluetooth serial port i think with a com number for the software

Wow that program looks nice I take it it's linux right? Which is good because I have a tablet pc that is running it.

I already have a USB to serial cable.

well your thingy is bluetooth so all you will have to do is pair it with the pc/tablet as a bluetooth serial port then you will get a port number which you can fill in in the program which indeed runs on linux i guess (i use windows). For me it worked straight away, only did not recognise the vin code maybe because it is european.

wow i did not know it had a windows version.. too bad I don't have any laptop with windows on it..

I'm going to play with it later tonight

an other option of software is Romraider, also for linux

It suppose to do logging and looks nice from the screenshots. I have not tried this one yet but will soon.

OK could not wait, so just checked romraider and also worked directly. This program can nicely log data, show in graph and cool gauges

perhaps you want to check that as well

Sorry to be beating an old horse, but: did you get your ELM327 dongle to work with Torque? What do you mean by "you have to mess around with it"?

I'm trying to check how my car is running but Torque (a) disconnects from time to time and (B) have very few dials available on the Subaru. On my '99 Saturn it "kinda" work, though, so I'm wondering where the problem might be...

  • Author

I don't know but after Ian did a few updates I've had no disconnects while driving 30 min to get home, works great now but I'm going to get the smaller blue looking bluetooth because I kicked the current one with my knee getting out one day and bent a few pins.

However mind you when you leave it plugged in it sucks up battery power from the car.

After reading your post I went ahead and bought the Pro version. Wow :)

The only thing I miss is the information from the transmission, but Torque says the car doesn't have multiple computers. I'll have to check that.

Among the release notes for the Pro version there's a little sentence to the tune of "corrects a bug that prevents communications with some Subaru ECUs".

What year car do you have if it's 90's anything you are not going to see anything regarding transmission.

And good job on the pro version it is well worth it! I'm going to buy a mount for my phone tomorrow to put on my window to hold me over until I get a 7" tablet.

Yep... I can see clearly now :D

My car is a '99 indeed, and it looks like -as you say- ODB2 will not give any more information. SSM, on the other hand, seems to provide a *huge* amount of data, but it's not compatible with the EBay ELM327 clones. Have you toyed with SSM before?

nope never messed with the SSM before I'm sure most of the PID's are going to take more time to figure out what is what.
