May 23, 201114 yr Does anyone know what alternator bearing a 97 legacy uses? If it matters, the alternator was replaced during a recall about 12 years ago. I know there’s a good chance the rectifier bridge will fail before the bearing does, but i figured i might as well do it since i replaced the idler bearing and PS bearing. Thanks
May 23, 201114 yr Overtightening the belts can cause bearing failures. I dont think its a common occurrence, but the belt systems o n the newer stuff will allow you to overtighten it much more easily
May 23, 201114 yr It's a 6303 double sealed ball bearing with the following dimensions: 17mm ID x 47mm OD x 14mm W If there's no play, I might just pop the seals off and regrease the bearing. The pilot bearing doesn't take much of a load and should be fine.

I may be able to find a new 6203 laying around here somewhere; if not I think i'll just take your suggestion and grease it.
May 24, 201114 yr Waste of time. The recalled alt part number at the dealer is only $65 and you will get new brushes, rectifier, and bearings. Also, replace your belts when they get hard and squeal instead of tightening the hell out of them and blowing all the accesory bearings. GD Edited May 24, 201114 yr by GeneralDisorder

May 24, 201114 yr Apparently it was a pretty big problem. Every one of the cars of this era that I've ever looked under the hood of has a Subaru reman sticker on the alternator.
