Is there some way to tell from looking at the head gasket tabs if the gaskets are original or newer ones>

 

The car has 154K on it.

yes. sometimes just a quick cursory glance makes it rather obvious. is the gasket new and shiny or old and rusty? does the head look like it was cleaned?

 

the newer gaskets have a little stamp/indentation on the corner tabs.
