How much should I expect to pay for a rebuilt carburator for an '84 4WD GL wagon? Also, approximately how much labor time by an experienced mechanic? I have just learned that I may be facing this with my old Subie.

It will probably be cheaper and you would be better off getting a Weber DGV 32/36 and adapter plate.

You are better off buying a reman carb than paying a mechanic (if you can even find one that could/would do it). Either that or consider swapping over to a Weber or the SPFI fuel injection system.
