I have a 97 Legacy Outback. I swapped in a 2.2 that was supposed to be out of a 98 Legacy, come to find it its from an Impreza. There were no hook ups for the carbon canister on the 2.2 and I had to change the Y pipe. Other than that it dropped right in and started right up. It runs good, but bogs bad at low Rpm and has trouble on the highway. The check engine light has been on since the install, and it runs fine when cold. I have already ruled out the catalytic convertor. The 2.5 ran great before the rod knock. Any help would be appriciated.

good job, that's exactly how it goes. doesn't matter that the EJ22 was out of legacy or impreza - they're all the same. all 98 EJ22's would have a single port exhaust and the carbon canisters have two varieties on the menu. good job working it out.

 

if the CEL is on the first step is always to read the code. guessing it pointless when you have a red light flashing at you and the codes can be read for free at thousands of auto parts stores across the country. the OBDII scanners are invaluable though and only $50 or less on ebay.

No, ECM works fine with either motor. Go to a parts store like Autozone or Advanced and they'll read the codes for free. Then come back with the code number and we can give some advise.

 

I'd be leaning toward a bad knock sensor, because that can cause serious driveability issues, but we don't know until you get the code pulled.

Thank you. The knock sensor solved that problem. It now has power and is getting better gas mileage. Now I need to figure out why the transmission upshifts really fast. It shifts between 2000 and 2500 RPM even when floored.

I think I have the tranny problem figured out, lets hope nothing else goes wrong.

there's a shift resistor for auto trans, if it got unplugged that would make it shift harder.

I will need to look into that shift resistor it does shift hard. The problem I had was it was shifting too soon. When I swapped the motor my neighbor helped me. I should have double checked him and didnt. The motor was coming loose from the tranny. The top bolts were both backed out almost half an inch, on the bottom 1 nut was completely gone while the other was loose. I tightened them all up and now it shifts good again.

That was bloody lucky mate! Dad's '89 rangie did the same thing about 3 months after an engine rebuild but it had this nasty knocking like a really bad big end bearing knock - found out the engine/gearbox bolts were loose, once these were done up all was good again!
