Hey everyone. I need to replace a rear wheel bearing on my GL. Was hoping to order the part prior to ripping it apart. Does anyone know whether the bearings are a kit/assembly or sold as separate inner and outer bearings? I noticed the older models are cone shapped bearings, yea? Sorry, I'm looking at the hayne's manual and it bounces back and forth to cone shaped and a bearing assembly, can someone clarify or drop a part number? Thought about running to the pick and pull, but all the GL's in there have over 160k on them, and thats where I am with the oem bearing. I already replaced both fronts, the noise is killing me.. From Rockauto.com and they quote $50.79 I am not sure, but it does not look sealed. It says it is for 4wd rear (you didn't specify) and it is the all in 1 bearing.

There were three or four designs over the years - they are all equivelent and interchangeable though.

I recently replaced mine, its a bearing that requires to be pressed in,and taken out with gear puller, but it is not a sealed bearing.

You don't need a press . A little creative work with a brass drift and some of the old bearing peices to drive in the new one is all that's required.

It's 4wd. Drivers rear. The assembly is most likely trashed, so I'm thinking I will hit up the pick and pull. If not, suggestions... Is this job easier than the fronts? I did both of em about a month ago, sucked.

I would say it's slightly harder than the front's if anything. Though I do bearings all the time so neither is any real big deal to me..... but in the rear the bearing assembly all comes out through the backside of the pocket - and there is a big ring nut that if you don't have the special socket for it can be difficult to remove. Otherwise it's about the same.

Can i purchase this socket somewhere besides the dealership? Saw pics in the haynes manual. Will I need to press the bearings in or can I use the old ones to rubber mallet them in?

Actually you can't get it through the dealer. If you wanted a "dealer" one you would have to order it through Kent-Moore's Subaru service tool department - they manufacture all the tools the dealers use now.
