i have decided i can not get rid of my Subaru because i have become attached to it, and i want to make everything right on it.

 

so today i was talking to some technician guy who owns and runs his own shop, and who also has some experience with the older Subaru's. i was talking to him today and explaining that even after rebuilding my engine, getting the oil pressure problem solved, and replacing my mickey mouse gasket on the oil pump, its still ticking. he told me the only way to fix the problem is to replace my oil pump and i cant seem to find one locally or online. what im wanting to check with you guys is if i really do need to replace it. im running Valvoline Premium Conventional 10W-40 in it, and at first start up when cold (i have an aftermarket pressure gauge, FYI) im getting 65 PSI, then fully warmed up at a 900 RPM idle, im getting about 12 PSI, then running aobut 2000 RPM (fully warmed up) im getting around 30-35 PSI, and around 3000 RPM (usually on the highway) im reading about 45-50 PSI. i lost my book, so im wondering if these numbers are within spec, or what you guys usually see.

Ticking is fine, just get used to it Almost all subaru's tick at some point. The only TRUE solution is to replace ALL the lifters. This is the ONLY TRUE way to solve this problem. Here's GD post of the subject:

Pretty much sums up what you needs to do. Check post 6, he specifically mentions the oil pump WILL NOT fix this issue every time.

 

Or you could just ignore it and drive it as it is

I had my HLA's rebuilt, was a lot cheaper than new items. Did all the othger recomended steps, and so far doing great. Sounded like hell at first start up though. Thought I had destroyed the poor little thing.
