October 1, 201114 yr I have searched through tons of threads, I found a link for GD's write up several times, But i cant get through to the page, I have an idea on what to do, I have never replaced a clutch cable, So I just need to know what all needs to be removed etc. Things to do and not to do, to replace it and make sure its installed correctly, Its a 87 GL wagon, The Clutch cable snapped. its not my car, once when i drove it i noticed the clutch was extremely hard to push compared to my Loyale. any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance!
October 1, 201114 yr If you still haven't found out how to do it by tommorrow ill ask my dad I have helped him do them but haven't totally done one by my self,
October 1, 201114 yr I recently did one in my 83 coupe and it was pretty easy. I had to take the clutch pedal off to get the new cable on . just follow the old one through the fire wall and hook it up the same way the other one was.
October 1, 201114 yr Author well i know i have to make sure to route the cable under the heater hoses and steering column right? from what i can tell you feed it through from under the dash, i am not a big guy so i can get under there fairly easy, the clutch peddle is already off. thanks for your input!
October 1, 201114 yr it's really easy - like he said just follow the existing cable as a guide. install the clutch pedal end. the pedal end is the only one that can be tricky (at least on an XT6 which in this case i think is similar in set up), i incorrectly installed one the first time i ever did a clutch cable. once it was off it wasn't immediately obvious which way a pin or clip, or which side of a bracket it attached to..something like that. memory isn't clear how i messed it up, but i would take a picture first of the old one before i removed it if doing it for the first time again. **it's actually really, really easy. on a scale of 1-10 - it's like a 1. the annoyance factor might be different since you have to work down around the footwell area with limited light, working with your feet over your head is no fun! follow the routing of the old one which is really simple, it just goes through the firewall and a grommet. the shifter fork end is straight forward and has like a 12mm and 10mm nut (from memory) on the end. loosen those up appropriately to attach that end.
October 1, 201114 yr well i know i have to make sure to route the cable under the heater hoses and steering column right? seems like it goes under the heater hoses - but if you hook it up right on each end it's going to work, it shouldn't matter. should be obvious which one gives the most clearance, least contact, and if it's so close it's hard to tell then it won't matter. like you said - eventually it'll be lower than the steering column since it's going to the pedal on the floor. that will be clear to you since once it goes through the fire wall there really isn't any routing to figure out - it goes straight to the pedal then which is really close to the firewall. all of the "excess" cable is in the engine bay. if you find my old thread from 5-10 years ago someone posted some pages from the HTKYSA manual regarding the clutch cable. good luck!
October 1, 201114 yr Author Thanks grossgary! i got it done in about a half hour, put it in right, got the peddle correctly installed in its place and to the cable itself etc. got it all in its place, greased it all up and adjusted it, it was pretty easy:lol: and it feels better than before, thanks everyone for your input!
