85 Brat Starter Replacement

Featured Replies

Still approaching problems as they come with my Brat. The latest adventure is dealing with what I believe are starter issues. Car will start and run sometimes, other times she won't turn over at all, just a click with the turn of the key and all power in car seems good. Going to begin removing the starter today and seems pretty simple, however if anyone has any suggestions/tricks to get this problem solved easily, please let me know! Thanks in advance

It's pretty easy. Remove spare tire, located on the driver's side of the bell housing.

It could be the starter, but it wasn't in mine. It wasn't even the ignition switch. It was the neutral safety switch!

Taking out the starter is easy, and if it's the nippondenso starter (large 'house' shaped solenoid attched to a round motor) you can pop the cover off the back of the solenoid and often get away with just hitting the 3 contacts (two solid, one moveable on the plunger) with some emery cloth. The contacts should be avaible from anywhere the does starter rebuilding for under $20 if they can't be polished out.

1st check all your grounds ... then check the switch ... mine was the switch good luck:o
