December 2, 201114 yr AS you remember my 87 Brat has a slight windshield problem I don't feel comfortable with replacing it myself, and was just going to pay the glass place. I also have a huge crack in my vinyl dash and was just going to cover it with one of those carpet things. Now my quandry. I have just bypassed my heater because of a wet floor. If the worst is true and I have to replace the heater core, is my course of action to remove the windshield, and replace the dash while replacing the core. WYAIT!! kind of stuff. Are "up north" dashes still flexible enough to ship. Replacing the dash will probably sink my hopes of getting this on the road this winter, but I know I will regret half assed measures later on. Advice? Encouragement? I will know more after I investigate my coolant leak this weekend Bill Edited December 2, 201114 yr by okie bill
December 2, 201114 yr the dash will be easiest to replace while the windshield is out. from there you can replace the heater core. but i have never changed the dash on an ea81, because the windshield has to be out to get to the screws.
December 2, 201114 yr The windshield does NOT need be out to pull a dash out on EA81, nor to put one in. Are you sure your leak isn't the control valve, instead of the entire core. the control valve is separate, and I have seen leaks there when the core is fine You do not want to have to ship a dash. They are large, and heavy I had a estimate from USPS to ship mine like 125 miles and the cost was over 200 just to ship. I sold the new dash for 85 and the person met me halfway. I have changed the dash and the windshield remained in the car. Might be a little easier with glass out, but that is entirely wrong to say it has to be out. Edited December 2, 201114 yr by bheinen74
December 4, 201114 yr Last poster is correct. The dash can be replaced with the windshield in place. Not easy to get at the front screws but it can be done. On the other hand, if the windshield is already out, dash replacement is easier.
December 4, 201114 yr Author I'm thinking, Go ahead and replace the windshield now. Its not the work of replacing the dash which would slow me down right now. It's obtaining a non cracked one in Podunk Oklahoma. Besides, now I have two of you guys to cuss next summer when I'm replacing it in 110 degree heat. :-p:-p
