March 16, 200422 yr Has I posted below my 99 leg/OB (75000) does not go into drive sometimes when the shifter is slid to " D " ( sometimes takes 30+ seconds ). It's been to VanBortle Subaru in Rochester NY & they say I need a new tranny @ the cost of $4500 (I would hope they checked the filter). I have not talked to the service manager yet but doubt they will admit to defect which I feel there is ( never had tranny trouble in my 25 years of driving ). I know one other person w/ a outback (99) & they had there tranny changed out just last week - luckly under warranty @ 60,000 miles. Am I going to get it stuck to me or what ? Doug
March 16, 200422 yr Author Does anybody know of any other Subaru message boards or links that possibly mite help while I chase this tranny problem. Looking for any & all info. Thanks, Doug
March 16, 200422 yr If nothing else you can get used transmissions for $1000 or less, and it would only take a regular mechanic 4-6 hours to replace. That brings the total to a much more practical dollar amount of around $1500 tops. I would look for a place that specializes in transmissions and take it there. Something like a AAMCO. Keith
March 17, 200422 yr Make sure they replace the filter if it hasn't been done. Don't make any assumptions, find out for sure. I have seen auto trannys do goofy stuff that was made better with a new filter. Some I have talked to locally prefer Piehler over Van Bortel for service. You may want to give them a try.
March 17, 200422 yr Same symptoms. My 2000 Legacy GT auto transmission was replaced under warranty at about 37,000 mi and the ease with which the tech diagnosed the problem with a nod to the service manager gave me the impression that this was a well known problem. You might approach SOA dierctly or ask the dealer to do it for you to see if they'll cut you some slack or share the expense.
March 17, 200422 yr Before you spend any money at the dealership or AAMCO, go to this site and check on a local tranny shop that is a member of ATRA. I have been ripped off by "the chain stores" twice, and won't ever go back to one. It won't cost anything to get an estimate or two, and may save you hundreds. http://www.atra-gears.com/
