Broken Exhaust Stud Removal.

Featured Replies

I've been putting off dealing with this, the time has come... I have broken exhaust studs that need to be removed from my heads.

The guy who had the car before me managed to snap these off on the original 85', big valve heads.

Other than taking my time and drilling these out does anyone have suggestions/tricks to try?

Do not drill or an ez out on them. Take them to a competent machine shop who if they know what they are doing will weld a nut and washer on them and just unscrew them. This is the best way to save the threads. I've done it hundreds of times and never had a failure to get them out. I don't know what the shop rates in Alaska are anymore because I haven't been back for 25 years but the last shop I worked at down here charged $5 a bolt to remove them ( takes about 5 minutes ). It can be done on the car as long as the exhaust is out of the way.

GD and I removed the exhaust studs from my BRAT by soaking them with YEILD 9which is like PB Blaster on PCP) and going at them with vice grips. It wasn't fun and it took a while, but it worked.

x2 on welding a nut on it. ive done it hundreds of times already in my 5 years as a mechanic and only once has it failed me. (ball joint pinch bolt, ohio rust)

i actually redid my studs this summer that way.
