91 Subaru Legacy Starting Probs

Hey guys, hoping somone can help me here. I have a lot of symptoms, and they ocassionaly change...I hope I can accurately describe them cuz I need some help!

Ok, somtimes my sub starts fine and runs great. Other times it will just turn over with no compression sound...I know what your thinking, it's not the timing belt...I just think it getting fuel or fire. And still other times it will start but it will be missing on at least on cylinder...and run very rough. Durring these times I have checked the spark plug wires and there is fire, but I don't know if it is firing in the right sequence or what ever, seems to be firing irraticly from at least one plug wire, and that plug wire makes no difference in running when I pull it. When I pull the injector plug wire on that cylinder it makes a slight difference in the running...but not much. The wierd thing is that it will somtimes change cylinders...usually #3 or #4...and it all goes away once it started and warm...and if I go back out to the garage in a few hours it will start and run like a dream. WTF!

Things I have replaced, checked:

Fuel filter R2 (Remove and Replace)

Fuel pump pressure check good

Plugs Cleaned and gapped

Plug wires ohm checked good

Cam Pos Senser Did voltage check when running good only, good

Think that's it

Ps. it dosen't do this all the time...just on the mornings I need it! Mabey temperature related?

ARRRGH!!!

Im going with temp related.

What is happening is either the Idle Air Control Valve is stickung open, or the engine temp sensor is dying.

No start - not rich enough mix

Start fine - well, everything normal

Start with a miss - mixture is too rich.

Since it is variable I would start with the IAC as that makes the most sense, like sometimes it sticks open, sometimes closed, sometimes fine. Engin temp sensor is fairly consistant once it gets a dead spot.

Ok, so got the IAC off and have it soaking in some cleaner...looked kindof gunky...so what exactly does the temp sensor control? What kind of symptoms could I expect from a failure and how do I test it?

Temp sensor tells the puter how cold the car is, and the puter decides the fuel mixture on that. Since Your IAC is really gunky, lets fix one part at a time :)

Ok, got IAC cleaned up and in...started perfect and went from a fast idle to a slow normal idle in a smooth manner...so far so good...*crosses fingers* I'll post tomorrow night and let you know if it started ok in the cold cold morn. Thanks for the help nipper! I would not have figured that one out without it.

Once the weather clears up give it a tuneup, and change the PCV valve when you can. Your seals will thank you.
