2005 outback rack and pinion question

Featured Replies

I was told at the shop that my power steering fluid was leaking and I would be looking at a rack and pinion replacement including tire rod caps or something like that. he quoted me at 9-1k. Just wondering if that sounds right and if anyone would have suggestion to cut costs at all... any ntl. names such as firestone or sears auto or something like that that might be lower cost. Also wondeing if I just keep an eye on the power sterring fluid how long I'd be good?

Thanks for any ideas.

Rack and pinion replacement on a 2005? How many miles have you got on this? I have 228K miles on my '97 Impreza wagon and have yet to be losing any fluid. Only time I had issues was with an earlier model where I rebuilt the power steering pump myself; two kits from Subaru came in at around $80 for both.

Where is the leak coming from? It could be as simple as a faulty hose clamp. It's been a long time since I needed to do this, so I'll defer to anyone who's more experienced at this than I am.
