Transmission locked in 1st and 2nd gear

Featured Replies

Hey guys, i've got a 91 legacy with a 4EAT, and it has crapped out.

I was plowing through a snow drift in manual 1st and something let go and it acted like i was in neutral. I put in in drive, and it started in second gear and i make it home.

I went out today to go to work and i put it in manual first to see what would happen. something locked up and it would barely move. i shifted into manual second and it would go, but it dragged like it was fighting first gear. i had to drive it to work because it's my only legal car, and one of the clutches or clutch packs smell burning when i got there. btw its only a mile to work.

has anyone else had a similar problem? also i cant find any technical data for the transmission like clutch application charts, or even rebuild procedures.

i dont want to drive the car till its fixed. good thing i was gonna buy a bicycle anyway

thanks!

When my 91 4EAT, everyone on this forum advised me to install a used tranny, as it is not worth trying to repair a 4EAT tranny. I seem to recall that any 4EAT from model years 1990-1944 will swap in. A used 4 EAT tranny is pretty cheap at a wrecking yard.

The shifter linkage eventually connects to a "fan-shaped"whatever on the passenger side of the transmission. It has detents for every gear. Slim chance it maybe out of adjustment. But it sounds like you smoked the transmission driving it to work.
