Thing that holds the door open on an incline

Featured Replies

'99 Forester,

Is there a way to adjust this? I recently picked up this car and I love it in most ways, but the driver's door won't stay open on anything but the slightest incline.

Thanks!

Hey man good to see you're still around!

Adjustment I don't think so, but I've never dug into the mechanism to see for sure. I have the same problem on both my Legacys. None of the doors stay open on any kind of an incline so I figured thats just the way it is on these cars.

Can't be too hard to replace. This can't be too helpful either. :-p

hehe, yeah I'm still around. Haven't been on much lately , at least not to post.

I don't remember my '96 outback having that problem, but it's been about 3 years since I owned that car and the memory is a fickle thing. I didn't see anything obvious when I was staring at it earlier and I don't have a book for this car yet. I'll report back if I find anything interesting this weekend when I have some time to dig further.

i don't see that a solution to this door problem was offered, but I would like to raise it again.  As 'lostinthe202' noted, my Ourback Wagon doors won't stay open unless the car is headed downhill or absolutely level.  I call the car "The Amputator" because of the tendency of the door to slam shut just as you are stepping out !  The problem is dangerous, very inconvenient and obviously a design or quality control flaw.  As usual, the dealers just shrug their sholders.  Although I don't think I should need to, I'm willing to pay to have the problem corrected.  However, I would like to know if a replacement for the 'hold-open' mechanism is likely to be an improvement or just a repeat of the original flawed mechanism.  Does anybody have any experience? - it is apparently over the head of the dealer.

They're usually easy enough to remove. Might try heading down to a u-pull-it junkyard near you and start swapping some around. Maybe one from another car will work better?
