Which rear anti-sway bar set-up for Impreza

My bro picked up a '93 Impreza about a month ago. We are planning on doing the rear disc brake upgrade and would like to also do a rear anti-sway bar install. I have done some research but still have some questions.

 

I noticed two styles of rear sway bar:

 

1) Legacy Brighton style with c-shaped end links.

 

2) '90-'94 Lego style with straight end links.

 

Are either of these a better choice for an Impreza?

 

Do we need an Impreza sway bar, aftermarket, or will a Lego sway bar fit?

Legacy and Impreza rear sway bars are different. Your best bet would be to get the stuff from a newer Impreza that came with a rear sway.

I don't know about the end links, but I can send you a photo of mine if you like. I replaced my 12mm rear sway bar with a 21mm (I think that's the measurement) from a WRX. Got it for free since the previous owner of the swaybar was upgrading to an aftermarket version. I think I even got the endlinks with it for free. It was a considerable improvement and it's been on the car now for more than 6 years worth of daily driving and rallycross. And the previous poster is correct, the legacy bar won't fit.

Regarding the read disk upgrade: rear disks from an early ('92 or '93) Legacy will fit. Slightly newer should fit too. When I first ordered replacement pads based on the year and model of the Legacy that I had pulled the donor brakes off, I found they didn't fit; turns out I had installed brakes from a '95 Legacy (someone had upgraded the brakes on the donor car before I got to it) Take everything including the handbrake cable. The cable will be slightly longer than the original, but there's plenty of room to install it. I forgot why, but your original brake cable won't work with the legacy rear disks. Rear disk brake upgrade is a worthwhile one.

 

Just for your information, my Impreza wagon is a '97 model L. I'm pretty sure my endlinks are the c-shaped version.

From my searches it sounds like the disc brake e-brake cable attaches differently at the brake end than the drum set-up. We were looking at them at the yard this weekend then priced them on-line. They are only like $12-$15 so I think my brother is just going to order new ones.

That's kind of the way I was leaning. Seems like I saw more aftermarket parts online for that style.

That's pretty much what I figured. The newer Imprezas don't show up in the yards as much as the Legacys. People tend to hold onto them more I guess, so we might have a while to wait. My brother is really getting into his new Sube, so he might kick down the cash for aftermarket stuff or used resale.

If I recall, a board member that did an Impreza lift swapped over a rear sway bar from a first gen Forester. It was about twice the thickness of the Impreza and looked like it was just a bolt on.

I'm not so sure that a newer Impreza will have a beefier swaybar. The skinny one that was stock on my '97 was intended to minimize oversteer; not at all useful for rallycross IMHO. Unless you go for an Outback Impreza it's not likely that you'll see a larger rear swaybar. Your other comment is right on the money...there aren't a lot of later model Imprezas in the yards as yet. I've been looking since I bought my first one 8 years ago and haven't ever found anything newer than '98 (and the one '98 I found was just this year); mostly '93 to '96 and they all have the skinny swaybar. I haven't ever seen a WRX in the yards yet either. Watch craigslist and nasioc for people selling their WRX stock bars for cheap or free. Usually they come with a cheap set of c type endlinks.
