Drive shaft interchangebility - 97 Imprez

Featured Replies

Hey Guys:

I had a mishap recently where the driveshaft on my 97 Impreza 5sp sedan gave out - also cracking the tanny case in the process. I found another 5 speed, and now I'm trying to locate the right driveshaft.

Does anyone know what years & models will work in my car? Is this a 5sp Impreza-specific driveshaft, or will the Legacy (or EA82?) work as well?

thanks!! John

I have used this logic in the past and it hasn't burned me yet.

The chassis type (Impreza/Forester or Legacy/Baja/Outback is the back half of the shaft.

The transmission is the front half.

Most of these are 2 piece with a flange you can unbolt in the middle.

The Ea82/Loyale series are just slightly different. In a pinch they might work but long term isn't good.

I have these in stock if you just need a part of a shaft and can't find one local.

Thanks guys!!

Shawns rule of thumb makes a lot of sense - especially if the legnth of that back section is the same between two and four door Imprez models

appreciate the feedback...

John

usually the there is a difference between the AT / MT rear sections, at least on the lego models. but i don't know if the rear lego shaft it the same as the rear impreza shaft.

you can search what you are looking for on http://www.car-part.com, and see what matching shafts they return.
