Subaru dude- good call, large rear bearing is shot. Not bad enough to warrant pictures but you called it. Now i just have to find one and figure out how to get it off and back on.

Just as I suspected.

I just did this. It's not too bad of a job but you need a HUGE puller or just take it to a trans shop and have them press it off and back on.

I ended up using this setup, turning the forcing screw with a breaker bar, holding the puller still with a 3 foot pipe. And it barely got the thing loose. Once it cracked loose everything moved fairly easily, and the new bearing was easy to hammer on with the help of the old bearings inner race and a large socket. IMG_2815.jpg

Had the shaft held in a vice with pieces of 2x4 on either side to protect the shaft.

This was the reason for replacement. Sounded like a rod knock.

The bearing should run about $50-60 at the dealer. IIRC the same bearing was used in the MT from '90 to 98 or 99, when they changed some things internally.

Very cool. I'm glad i stumbled onto this forum it has been a huge help. Thanks a ton.

Fixed a bunch of those in the last year fun to get apart isent it carefull how tightly u press it together can be damaged easyly

A couple of things not in that write up that will help out with reassembly,

Put a hose clamp on the shift arm to keep it at the correct height for when you're dropping the tail housing on. You can measure the correct distance and set it that way,

Some pics from when I did this job to illustrate the point,

Easy job. Thanks for all the help. What could cause the tob and fork to not move enough to engage the pp?
