3AT slams/knocks(??) into reverse only - motor or tranny mount?

Featured Replies

this is a problem i've lived with forever but i'm now at the point where i think it's something i can tackle...

when i start my 84 wagon and put the car into reverse it sort of slams/knocks into gear. it doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold, raining or dry outside. the tranny is otherwise awesome, it down/up shifts when it should, is super smooth, there is no apple-coring on the governor gear, it never slips, transmission fluid has been changed at the recommended intervals, etc.

could this be a motor and/or tranny mount issue? how many does an ea81t have? is there something else i should be looking for?

It could be a trans mount at this point in the cars life. Its been a really long time since ive seen the 3AT so i cant for the life of me remember if there is just one big mount at the back of it or whether there is two. I "think" there is just one. It would be pretty easy to check out if its shot or not. Go under the car (with the car securely on jack stands!) and see if the mount looks ripped. If you cant tell put a piece of wood under the trans and jack on it. Mount might just split in two telling you all you need to know.

great, that's what i needed to know. i was worried i'd get the car up and start digging around to find that i can't tell if the mounts are okay or not.

it looks like the MT has a rear and a front:

ANCHOR Part # 8665

DEA Part # A6702

but the AT has only a front:

DEA Part # A6706

or

ANCHOR Part # 8661

can anyone verify?

on a 3at there is just one trans mount at the back of the trans. at the crossmember. i just replaced my 3at in my loyale 2 months ago.

ordered a tranny mount on monday, should be here tomorrow. we'll see if that helps!

for future reference, when those AT trans mounts break/rip you can lie under the car grab the tail shaft of the tranny and push up on it. When the mounts good, it should only move maybe an 1/8".

My 4EAT had the same problem clunking in reverse. I glued the trans mount back together with Windo-Weld urethane 7 years ago and it's still fine.
