drive shaft support bushing

Featured Replies

I think i've found my clunk when i take off. I can reach under the car and move the drive shaft support bushing and it'll make the exact same sound. The bushing itself is fine but the 2 grommets that the bolts go through are the problem. I can move the frame when it's bolted down and hear the clunk at the 2 bolts. Can these 2 grommets/sleeves be serviced? or do i need a whole center bushing. If so how are these center bushings removed from the drive shaft? I have a custom drive shaft due to swapping my car to m/t so i'd prefer not to buy a new shaft.

If you're just talking about the 2 bolts that hold the center bearing of the driveshaft to the car, you can replace those bushings. They just pop, or slide out of there spots. They can even be solid mounted there because the center bearing mount has a rubber mount as well. So you could sandwich a few washers in there or something and bolt it up.

You should be ale to use something like that. You could also just go buy some large washers from the hardware store and just take the grommets out entirely.

Those bushings are what I have in my Forester XT, the Torque Solutions ones. But they won't go into the older style driveshafts without modification, I know this from experience. Unless they have different ones for differetn years, but they only had one when I bought mine and they fit the newer style, like 02+ or something. So I wold really just use a couple big washers behind, and one washer on top and bolt 'er down!
