Hi, my name is Brian and I just met a member named Skeet who sent me this webpage to post my problem with my Subaru. i hope this is the right thread. I've never posted on any site before.

I have a 95 Subaru Legacy. The ABS light has come on, my brakes are jumpy, and there is an odd buzzing noise coming from the front right area of my car. If anyone has any suggestions as to what might be the problem or what I might do about it I would appreciate it.

Brian, welcome to the Board. I'm sure someone here could point you in the right direction with your ABS problem. I would suggest you re-post this on the New Generation forum. You'll likely get more response there. Sorry I couldn't help you with the actual problem; altho I have an older Legacy with ABS I don't have enough experience with that.

I met this guy at a gas station, I noticed him putting Minit Mart oil into his soob and thought "Oh no!" hehe.

 

I don't know jack about abs, all I know is that the little unit behind the passenger headlight was making some weird buzzing sound. Could have been a vac leak, but I couldn't find one.

I am no "rocket surgeon" when it comes to ABS but are the brake pads and fluid within normal limits? I think my brake light (ABS?) came on when the pads wore to the point of creating very low brake fluid in the reservoir. Brian, welcome to the site where the mutterings of genius and madmen are posted side by side.

somewhere there is a thread tittled "ABS moter Buzzing" which talkes more about the same problem you are having. the consensus is a bad relay. I've had this same problem on and off and never been able to figure out a complete cure. however worn pads and old, dirty brake fluid seem to aggravate this condition (perhaps lack of pressure?) i can't really be sure because i have new pads, and fairly new fluid, and had the same old buzzing, whirling (whatever) sound this past weekend. i noticed it saturday, it continued all day, and must have gone on all night, because when i got in the car sunday, the battery was completely drained. once i got the car jump started (and the battery tested) i was back on the road with no strange noises or abs lights on.

 

 

i'm not sure if this will help you, you can do a search for tha other thread, however no ones offered up any advice as to a permanent fix. (HINT to anyone with the 411) i'd like to solve the problem myself.

Welcome new member, but sorry to hear about your ABS. The whirling you hear is from an electric motor that spins an eccentric. (a cylinder that is mounted off center) When the ABS control unit senses a wheel lock up, it spins this eccentric, which moves hydraulic valves in the ABS unit, which allows pressurized brake fluid to leak into an internal reservoir, thereby avoiding a wheel lock up. After the braking pressure is released, the reservoir is spring loaded to force the fluid back into the brake lines. If your electric motor continually spins, you may have a bad wheel sensor, or sensor connection.

 

Hope this helps.

Check the pads and fluids first.

 

Then replace the relay. You will probably have to go an authorised dealer to make sure you get the right part. If this doesn't help, you will need to replace the entire ABS unit! Very costly, unless you pick up a used item.

 

OR, remove the ABS computer fuse and drive the car without ABS.

Can't you pull the ABS fuse and drive with normal brakes? Seems better that having that going on while you're driving around...
