comes on when eng is hot goes out when cooled down, any ideas? thnx and happy holidays

Goes out when cooled down, such as shut off for a while?

Any code(s) or just a light? Other symptoms...what car, etc.

Year model engine transmission.

A CEL means the ECU is detecting a fault with the emissions control systems of the car. It turns on the light to let you know it needs to be fixed because the problem is increasing the harmful emissions output of the engine.

Knowing the important info above will help determine how to retrieve the fault codes which will in turn determine the necessary repairs.

code probably still pending or otherwise retreivable.

swing by a PepBoys or other such place, they will read the code at no charge. Have them clear the ECU if they will and report the code(s) here. Monitor how quickly the light comes back on and be prepared to have the system read again but, it seems it will set the code repeatedly.

98 leg 2.2 auto light goes off after sitting & cooling down sorry forgot to put car info here

could be the knock sensor. if you don't live near a place that could plug a reader into the OBD II port and read the code(s), check the knock sensor for cracks. if its cracked, replace it. less than $20 on amazon.
